Mom's Depression Effects the Child's IQ

A mother’s depression could cause lasting effects on the child...

A mother's depression may affect her child's IQ...This is not just postpartum depression either. A study has found the lack of playful attention a mother would normally provide drastically affects development. From birth through age 16, children whose mothers are depressed are likely to have lower IQs.

Nearly 25% of mothers have postpartum depression, raising the risks of ADHD and developmental delays for their children. One in 10 women will suffer depression at some point in their lives.

The research suggests that depressed mothers are less engaged in educational activities with their children. This study not only showed the importance of getting moms treatment but also why dads and extended family need to pitch in.
